A quick lookThe little village of Castagnols is situated at the heart of a natural setting, in a small valley at an altitude of 750 m. Well-protected in a hollow at the end of this valley lies “La Source de Castagnols”, a restored farmhouse which carries the name of the old spring on its land which provided water for the village. Dating to 1684, the farmhouse possesses massive stone walls, fine gateways, heavy chestnut roof beams, roofing of schist slates, courtyards, open terraces and a beautiful dining hall with a huge fireplace.
Bed & BreakfastOur farmhouse is an excellent base for a holiday in one of the wildest and most beautiful regions of southern France,
in the heart of the Parc National des Cévennes, a nature reserve. Our chambres d’hôtes are classed “3 epis” by Gîtes de France. They are spacious, decorated in the Cévenol style, each with its own bathroom and WC. The comfortable beds offer a restful experience augmented by the tranquillity of Castagnols.

Information on demand.Table d’hôtesIn the evening you may join our family on one of the terraces to enjoy the local wine and a three-course supper of French cuisine with a regional character. During the beautiful summer evenings you will also enjoy the brightly starlit sky, undimmed by artificial light.
The land around the farmhouseOn the farmhouse lands are many faïsses, as they are called locally, once-farmed terraces which offer wide panoramas of the Mont Lozère and the mountains of the Ardèche. You will find quiet places to enjoy solitude and the silence of Castagnols. Some terraces are shaded, others sun-drenched for sunbathing. There is also a terrace devoted to children, with swings, spaces to construct cabins and a place for water-play by the spring.
The environmentThe Cévennes is an excellent region for hiking and mountain biking. Its landscape is highly varied and breathtakingly beautiful. You will find little valleys with rushing streams and secret spots, high wide plateaus with rough boulders, deep gorges with coursing water. Hiking can begin literally just in front of our farmhouse, which is situated on the edge of a GR or Grande Randonnée trail. There is no need to use your car at all, although you will find it rewarding to explore the area further by car.
There are nearby streams and water courses where you may swim, jump, dive and construct dams. There a number of outdoor sports to be enjoyed, such as canoeing/kayaking, canyoning, rock climbing, mountain biking, horse riding, and hiking with a donkey, as described by Robert Louis Stevenson in his Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes.
We will be delighted to welcome you at “La Source de Castagnols”.
